Workshop Outline
August Zemo, Facing History and Ourselves, Switzerland:
"Education as a tool in the prevention of genocide"
This workshop will look at the nature of genocide and
its evolution in the 20th century by a brief examination
of the German genocide in its southwest African colony and then going on
to focus (with a video clip from Amnesty International) on the Rwandan
genocide. The presenter would also touch upon Ervin Staub’s summary of
the preconditions for genocide in Armenia and Nazi Germany before I looked
at Amnesty International’s suggestions for the prevention of genocide
(and why they hold little hope for success). The workshop would then
briefly examine of a series of incidents of racism in a small American
city and what was done about them by the citizens (using a brief video
clip) before concluding with a recent Harvard study of how Facing History
reduces incidents of racism in schools.
