Prof. John Andrews, Prof. Bill Waters, Northern Michigan University:
"Role of Humor in Police work"

We need to be RESPONSIBLE in criminal justice work, but do we necessarily need to be SERIOUS? This paper addresses a wide range of issues revolving around HUMOR and its realistic application to training, policy, behavior and professional philosophy in the criminal justice workplace. The importance of humor in a stressful and complex society has become the focus of research and discussion in recent years and is ongoing. Many in the medical profession have recognized the healthful and healing effects of humor and laughter in some significant ways. There are "humor" rooms in some hospitals, for example, and clowns make their "rounds" in children's cancer wards. There is some evidence to suggest a connection between laughter and a stronger immune system. Industry and business are acknowledging the positive impact of humor in the workplace in terms of management and relationship issue. Some businesses sponsor laughter seminars for employees. Criminal justice professionals such as police and prison officials have much to learn from the humor phenomenon.
