Workshop Outline

Joseph Wronka, Springfield College:
"Toward the Creation of Human Rights Action Alerts"

With particular attention to the plight of minority populations, this workshop will first examine methods to create human rights action alerts as educational tools to promote awareness of human rights documents and also to promote socially just policies. Particular attention will be paid to the lack of human rights principles in United States laws and the recent welfare reform bill, Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996 has led to increasing poverty in the USA. This workshop will also examine ways to use the information learned from creating these action alerts by using UN confidential procedures, working with human rights committee monitoring procedures and setting up of government Human Rights Departments to coordinate activities between domestic and international human rights bodies.
